Ezekiel's Response to Some Elders
In this chapter, the Prophet is approached by some of the Elders of Israel.
They do not seem to have any specific questions but rather inquire if the Lord
had anything to tell them. It would appear that the Lord had a great deal to
tell them and He instructs Ezekiel what to say.
- He was to tell them of God's displeasure with them. What right did
they have to inquire of God and them go and continue to live in
their trespasses?
- He was to show they why God was displeased with them by reminding
them of their treacherous dealings with God in Egypt, in the
wilderness and in Canaan. Idolatry was the main sin of the
Israelites. The idols of Egypt, the golden calf of the wilderness
and the false gods of the Canaanites tempted them into worshipping
them.
- He was to announce the judgments of God against them and tell them
of the mercy that He had in store for them when He would bring back
a remnant, who would repent, into their own land and set up His
sanctuary among them again. All this God would bring to pass by the
power of His might; He will bring them under the bond of the
covenant.
