Religious Ideals
In this chapter we have suggested some Religious Ideals on Doctrine, Ritual
and the Sanctuary including some of the following:
- The assigning of the East Gate of the Temple to the prince.
Apparently the other gates were always open, but the East Gate was a
sacred place reserved for the Priests and those ordained by God.
The East Gate was the gate into the entrance of the Temple. The
Tabernacle and the Temple always faced the East.
- A reproof of the House of Israel for their previous profaning of the
House of the Lord and a charge to be more careful in the future.
Here the Lord sends the Prophet to a "rebellious people". It is sad
to note that a people "chosen" of God could be so rebellious against
Him. But here we see God's mercy; He does not cast them off.
- The condemnation of the previous priests of the House of Levi who
were guilty of this idolatry and the establishing of a new
priesthood from the House of Zadok, which had kept their integrity.
Apparently during the times of idolatry in Canaan there were those
who remained faithful to the Lord and are here rewarded for their
faithfulness.
- Various laws and ordinances pertaining to the priests. Instructions
about their dress code is given. Hair length is determined, diet is
specified, marriage is regulated and their ministry, preaching and
teaching, is defined.
