Click here to read Ezra 5.

Chapter 5 records God's efforts to restart the building of the Temple. First, thru the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, He stirred up the people to start again. Then when the Persian Governor arrived in Jerusalem he demanded to know who had given them permission to continue their building program. They told him that their enemies had allowed them to continue while King Darius looked into the situation and gave his decision.

The Governor sent a letter back to King Darius informing him that the Jews were still in the process of rebuilding and insisted that King Cyrus in the first year of his reign had issued a decree that the Jews be allowed to return to Jerusalem and to take with them the gold and silver bowls which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the Temple and that the Temple of God be rebuilt as it was before. He requested that the King search the royal library and see if such a decree was ever made and then let him know what the King's pleasure was in the matter.
