Chapter 9 deals with the covenant that God made with man after the flood.
Noah had three sons, Ham, Shem and Japheth. From these three men, the entire world was populated. After the flood, Noah became the first farmer. He planted a vineyard and from the grapes he made wine. He drank the wine and got drunk. He lay naked in his tent. Ham discovers this and tells his brothers and they take a garment and walking backwards, cover their father. As the result of this, Shem and Japheth, who did not see their father's nakedness, were blessed. Shem was given the blessings of God and from his descendants would come the Messiah. Japheth would become the father of the Gentiles and populate the earth; eventually, they would be taken into the Kingdom of God. Ham's descendants would become slaves even to their own family. So eventually, Shem's descendants became God's chosen people, the Israelites; Japheth's descendants became the Gentiles; and Ham's descendants became the people of Africa, slaves even today in South Africa.
From these chapters, 5 through 9, we see man's disobedience, God's judgment and His covenant.
