Chapter 18 records God's disclosure to Abraham of His plans to destroy Sodom and Abraham's plea that Sodom be spared. It records the appearance of three heavenly messengers to Abraham. Abraham gives them food and water and rest from their journey. They promise Abraham that Sarah will have a son in the spring. Sarah overheard what they said and this time she laughed, but the messengers insisted that it would be so.
The messengers continued their journey and as was the custom, Abraham went a short distance with them. As they walked, the Lord revealed the purpose of these three messengers to Abraham. They had come to bring judgment to the cities of Sodom and Gomorah. Abraham was very distraught. He asked, "Would you destroy the righteous with the wicked?" "If I can find 50 righteous people there, would you spare the city?" They replied, "If you can find 50 righteous people there, we will spare the city." Then Abraham began to bargain. "Well. how about 45, or 40, or perhaps 30 or 20 or maybe even 10?" They replied, "For the sake of 10, we will not destroy the city." Then the messengers continued their journey and Abraham went back home.
