Chapter 22 deals with God's test of Abraham. God said to Abraham, "Take your son, Isaac, whom you love and go to the land of Mariah and offer him there as a burnt sacrifice." The next morning, Abraham took Isaac and two other young men and headed for the land of Mariah. On the third day he saw the place where the sacrifice was to be made. He left the two men and he and Isaac headed up the mountain.
Abraham had taken with him the wood, the fire and the knife. Isaac questioned his father, "Where is the sacrifice?" Abraham replied, "God will provide." On the mountain, Abraham built an alter and he took his son, Isaac, and laid him on the alter. He took the knife to slay him but the Lord intervened. An Angel spoke, "Do not lay your hand upon the lad for now I know that you fear the Lord more than you love your son."
Then the Lord provided a ram and Abraham took it and sacrificed it to the Lord. For his display of unselfish obedience, God promised to bless him and multiply his descendants. Then Abraham, Isaac and the two young men returned to Beer-sheba. The chapter ends with a genealogy of Nabor, Abraham's brother.
