The Death of Sarah

Click here to read Genesis 23.

Chapter 23 deals with the death and burial of Sarah. Sarah lived to be 127 years old. She died at Hebron in the land of Canaan. Abraham requested a place to bury Sarah from the Hittites. They offered him, free of charge, the best of their sepulchers but Abraham declined because he did not want her to be buried amongst the heathen. He asked for a place called the Cave of Machpelah that was owned by Ephron. He was willing to pay but Ephron wanted to give it to him. Abraham insisted and gave him 400 shekels of silver, approx. 1,400 dollars, and the field was deeded over to him. It was here that Sarah was buried.
