Chapter 26 records a famine in the land of Canaan. God tells Isaac to take his family and go down to Gerar but not to go down into Egypt. There Isaac makes the same mistake with his wife Rebekah, as Abraham did in Egypt with his wife Sarah. He claimed that she was his sister for he feared that the men of Gerar might kill him to get Rebekah for she was quite beautiful. When King Abimelech discovers that Isaac had lied about his wife he was very disturbed and warns all of his people. "Whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death." Isaac dwelled in that land; God blessed him and he became quite rich. At the request of Abimelech, Isaac departs and goes back up to Beersheba.
When Esau was 40 years old he took Judith, the daughter of Beeri and Basemath, the daughter of Elon to be his wives. Both were Hittites. They made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.
