Chapter 27 records the struggle between Esau and Jacob. Isaac grows old, his eyesight has failed and it is time to pass on his blessing to the oldest son. Esau was surprised when his father calls him in to receive his blessing, as he had sold his birthright to Jacob and because he had married Hittite women who did not believe in God.
Isaac instructs Esau to go hunting and bring back some venison for him and then he would give him his blessing. Rebekah, the mother, hears of this and together with Jacob they contrive to steal the blessing. How could they fool Isaac into thinking that Jacob was Esau? First, they faked venison with lamb. Jacob changed his voice to sound like Esau. He faked hair on his arms, became smelly with sweat and put on dirty clothes. Then lastly, he had to learn to lie. The deception worked; he fooled his father into giving him the blessing. When Esau returned and learned of it he became quite angry.
