Chapter 28 tells of Jacob fleeing the country to escape the wrath of Esau and going to Paddan-aram, his grandfather's place. The first day's journey was long. From Beersheba to Bethel, where he spent his first night, was about 60 miles. As Jacob slept out under the stars, he had a vision. He saw a ladder extending from heaven to earth with Angels going up and down. God was at the top of the ladder. This represented two things. First, God was in constant touch with earth and second, His will was being worked out in Jacob. This gave Jacob much comfort and eased his conscience. God revealed three things to him. One, he would inherit the land of Canaan. Two, his descendants would multiply and be as the dust of the earth and three, the Messiah would come from his descendants.
