Chapter 33 prepares Jacob for Esau's approach. There were 400 armed men approaching one man, several women and 11 children. But God was with Jacob. They approached one another, and Jacob bowed to Esau. Esau ran to him and embraced him. Jacob wept for joy. Esau wept for grief and shame. He offered Jacob his men for protection but Jacob refused declaring his protection was from the Lord. Esau departed to his own country Seir, and Jacob continued on his journey to Succoth, near the city of Shechem, in the land of Canaan. There Jacob bought a piece of land from the sons of Hamor for 100 pieces of silver (approx. $64.00). He built a house and barn there and an altar which he called "El-El'ohe-Israel" (God, the God of Israel). Note: The pieces of silver were not minted coins, they were just pieces of silver. The Hebrews did not use coins until after the Babylonian exile.
