Chapter 36 deals with the descendants of Esau. God had said to Rebekah, "Two nations are in your womb". We know one, Israel, that came through Jacob. Now we see another, Edom, that will come through Esau. Here Esau is called Edom and God gives him Mt. Seir. Esau left Canaan to Jacob and took with him his share of his father's estate. While the children of Israel lived in bondage in Egypt, the children of Edom lived and prospered on Mt. Seir.
The major theme of these chapters, 29 thru 36, was the birth of the 12 sons of Jacob that will form the 12 tribes of Israel. The central message was that God uses imperfect people to complete His plans. The role of these chapters was to illustrate human traits like favoritism, greed, anger, fear, love of home and forgiveness.
