Chapter 44 records the filling of the bags and the placing of a silver cup in the bag of Benjamin. A short distance from the city, Joseph's guards catch up with the brothers and upon examining the bags, the silver cup in found. They are brought back to Joseph and accused of stealing. Since the cup was found in the bag of Benjamin, he was to become Joseph's slave and the rest could return to their father. Judah makes a passionate plea for Benjamin offering to take his place for the sake of his father.
