Chapter 46. Jacob and his 11 sons and their families, 70 in all, go down to Egypt where Joseph welcomes them. It wasn't easy for Jacob to leave his home and go to a foreign land but the Lord assured him of a safe journey and again promised him that he would be the father of a great nation. Notice how Jacob's family had grown:
Going into Egypt, Jacob had 11 sons, 49 grandsons, 4 great grandsons, 2 daughters and 3 wives, a total of 70 people counting himself. Jacob sent Judah ahead to prepare for the meeting between himself and Joseph. They met at Goshen and embraced each other. Joseph prepared them for meeting Pharaoh. He advised them to tell Pharaoh when he asked their occupation, to tell him that they were shepherds. They would need to dwell apart from the Egyptians, as shepherds were an abomination to the Egyptians.
