Chapter 47. Joseph presented his father and his brothers to Pharaoh. Pharaoh asked Jacob how old he was and he answered 130. Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and Pharaoh gave them the land of Rameses, the best land in Egypt, on which to dwell and Joseph provided for his father and brothers according to the number of their dependents.

The famine continued in Egypt and the people of Egypt bought grain from the government until they run out of money. Then they brought in their cattle and exchanged them for grain. When their herds were gone, they brought in their possessions. When these were gone, they sold themselves as slaves or as servants of the state in order to get something to eat. Eventually, Pharaoh owned everything and all the people were his slaves. He gave them seed to plant with the stipulation that they would give 1/5 back to him.

Jacob lived 17 years in the land of Egypt. When it came time for him to die, he called Joseph to his side and made him promise not to bury him in Egypt but to take him home to Canaan for burial.
