The Wide and the Narrow Way

Two ways of life is described here. One is narrow and hard and the other is wide and broad. Lets look first at the "wide way".

  1. It appeals to the multitudes.
  2. There is an abundance of liberty.
  3. It requires no control of your appetites.
  4. You are free to pursue those things that appeal to the carnal mind.
  5. It is a natural choice.

But we are here told that this way leads to destruction and hell.

Now lets look at the "narrow way".

  1. The gate is narrow and hard to find. We enter it only by the Grace of God, guided by the Holy Spirit.
  2. Our guide to that narrow way is a new heart.
  3. Though this way is not a natural way for man, thank God that is obtainable through the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  4. This way is hard because of daily temptations and the demanding responsibilities of witnessing and living life to its best.

Note that not many people walk this narrow way. Why? Some are not so led of the Spirit. Some are so led but harden their hearts. Some feel, mistakenly, that no choice is necessary. Those who go this way find eternal life with the Lord.

In closing, lets look at this from a Calvinistic point of view. It can be stated simply, "We should not delay or deliberate our decision once we have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Seek, by sincere and constant prayers and it shall be shown unto you. It is true that we can neither go in or go on without divine assistance, but it is also true that Grace is freely offered and is sufficient to those who accept it.
