The Women of Galilee

Continuing on with our study of opinions, we find Jesus going through the country side, through cities and villages, preaching the "Good News". With him were His disciples and three women, whom we are told, He healed of evil spirits and infirmities. Remember that it appears that this took place directly after His encounter with the Pharisee and the sinful woman.

There are three things that we want to get from this passage.

  1. Christ's constant mission.
  2. His means of support.
  3. A possible tie between the two lessons.

First we see that His foremost mission was preaching and teaching. Notice it says that He preached the "good news", the news of "hope", "reconciliation" and "eternal life".

Secondly, we see how He met the necessities of life for Himself and for His Disciples. The necessities of life were quite simple for Him, food, enough to sustain strength, clothing, one cloak or robe and sandals and some form of lodging. He lived on the kindness of His friends.

Thirdly, a possible tie between this lesson and the previous one. Three women are introduced in this lesson. One of them, Mary Magdalene, out of whom Jesus had cast seven demons, certainly fit the category of the sinful woman in the last lesson. Matthew Henry says, "Some think she had been quite wicked to have had contained so many demons and suppose her to be the sinner mentioned in the preceding lesson." We know that Mary Magdalene attended Jesus much of His life after her conversion. She was at the cross when He was crucified and at the sepulchre when he arose from the dead.

The second woman was Jo Anna, wife of Chuza, a steward in the household of King Herod. He too had accepted Christ and from his position, was able to contribute to the support of Jesus and the Disciples. There were not many of great substance that contributed to Jesus but rather many small contributions from the poor. The third woman was Susanna, of whom, nothing is known except she gave of her means to the support of this ministry.
