The Disciples Report to Him

In the last lesson, Jesus sent the Disciples out to preach repentance. We have very little recorded concerning their activities during this period. We know that they were absent from Jesus for some time and during this period, they were very busy. Here we read something concerning the pace of their endeavors in Mark 6:30-31. They returned to Jesus and told Him all that they had done and taught. Notice two things. That which is said and, secondly, that which is not said.

First, they told Jesus what they did and what they had said. Jesus was interested in both of these. They did not tell Him what success they may have had. They were not accountable nor was Jesus interested in this. We are responsible for the sowing of the seed of "truth", but the result of that sowing is up to the Lord.

Notice what Jesus was most concerned about. He was concerned about their need for rest. "Come away, by yourselves, to a lonely place and rest a while." Christ realizes our frame and our need for rest and He takes no pleasure in a man working himself into an early grave, even in the process of doing good. Rest is necessary, but only for a while, and then refreshed, we must go back to work again.

Just now busy had they been? "They had no time even to eat." We see here the enthusiasm they had for their mission. But rest and solitude was short lived, soon they were caught up in a crowd of 5,000 people.
