He Teaches the Multitude
Having given the Disciples their lesson in the foregoing verses, He turns to the
people and gives them theirs. In general, He wanted them to be as wise in the
affairs of their souls as they were in the affairs of worldly things. He specifies
two things:
- They must learn God's way toward them and act accordingly. They,
by observation and experience, could forecast the weather, they,
must use those same skills to forecast what God has in store for
them if they persist in their sins. They could by observing
clouds in the west, predict showers or if the wind came from the
south they would predict the heat. Why couldn't they by knowing
the prophecies and relating to the signs of the times, expect the
Messiah and the coming of His Kingdom. Now is the acceptable time.
- They must hasten to make their peace with God before it was to late.
When we go before Magistrate for the resolution of a problem, we
agree with our adversary upon the best terms we can get. We must
do the same with our souls. We have, by sin, made God our adversary.
and like the Magistrate, He had both right and might on His side.
So there is little purpose in our arguing our case. If we insist
upon our own justification, our cause will certainly be lost and
we shall be cast into the prison of hell. Our sufferings will
them be for eternity and totally unnecessary when we consider
that The "sufferings of Christ paid for our justification.
Thus God was, in Christ Jesus, reconciling the world to Himself.
His message then to them was to take hold of the arm that the Lord had stretched
out to them in peace for we cannot walk together until we are agreed.
