Duty Versus Desire

Note what Jesus is saying in these verses is that our whole strength and our whole time is to be used for Him. We are not our own, we have been bought with a price. As God's servants we are to make good use of our time. When we finish one task for the Lord we are to begin another. When you get done plowing or feeding cattle in the field, and you come home at night, you still have work to do, and you must wait on tables. Christians say that with all that they have to do working, keeping house, raising children, they have very little time for the Lord.

Then Jesus instructs them as to what their attitude should be if they do these things. Remember that it is expected of Christ's servants that we use our talents for His work but we must also remember that we do not so much as deserve a "thanks" from the Lord for any service that we do for Him. No "good work" of ours can merit anything from the hand of the Lord. The best servants of Christ, even when they do their best, must acknowledge that they are "unprofitable" servants.
