This was the week of Passover. Thursday was the first day of Unleavened Bread. This day is called the Day of Fellowship. We will look at 7 events that we believe occurred on this day.
We will use primarily, Mark's account. Nothing is recorded on this day until sometime in the afternoon. The Disciples realizing that it was approaching time for the Feast of the Passover, asked Jesus where He would have them prepare for it. This Feast was always celebrated in the evening.
It should be noted that Jesus did not come to destroy the Law and that He and His Disciples observed this Passover as did the other Jews. We need also to remember that this was the night before He died. There appeared to be no apprehension of trouble to mar this day of fellowship.
Notice His instructions to His Disciples. These were similar to the ones that He gave them on Palm Sunday. "Go into the city, (Jerusalem) there you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water." Surly there must have been many men carrying pitchers of water in a city the size of Jerusalem. But no, men did not normally carry water, this was considered to be a woman's job. "When you find him, follow him to the house where he lives." "There tell the owner, the Teacher inquires where the guest room is that He might eat the Passover with His Disciples."
In Jerusalem, there were many rooms that were rented to those who came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feasts and here Christ makes use of one of them. It was not a room in a friend's house not does it appear that they had used it before. Was there anything particular about the "pitcher of water" coming into the house? Yes, In Isaiah it prophesied that a pitcher of water must go before Him. Also, we see later on that night, that Jesus took the pitcher of water and washed the Disciples feet. Notice the room. It was furnished and ready for a feast. It would appear that it was well furnished and had a rug on the floor. This seems contrary to the whole ministry of Jesus where He always ate in very modest surroundings.
This was a very special feast for Jesus and the Disciples. Here He would eat what would be His last meal with those who had become His family. Twelve Disciples, yes, Judas was with them, even though he had already betrayed his Master. He could not have been absence from this event for two reasons. One, he would have been "unclean" according to the Law if he did not observe it, and second, his absence from the 12 would have been very suspicious at this time.
Notice the question is often asked, why did Jesus, who knew of Judas' betrayal, allow him to eat the sacred feast with them? It was done to encourage us. Jesus put the "keys" to the Kingdom into the hands of men, who can judge only the outward appearance, therefore, we must be satisfied with a justifiable profession of faith for we cannot discern the heart.
So Mark tells us that they found the room as Jesus had instructed them and they prepared the Passover meal.
