We will use that account as recorded by Luke. They led Him away as a lamb to the slaughter. No other person in history was ever arrested, tried, judged and executed on a period of 5 or 6 hours and Jesus knew this was going to happen for He said to His Disciples, "Yet a little while and you shall not see me."
After the soldiers had scourged and humiliated Him, they led Him from the Praetorium to a place outside the gate (Heb. 13:12) to a hill (Mark 15:40) to a place called Calvary (Greek) or Golgotha (Aramaic) both names mean the "skull". The exact location of this place is unknown. Many sights have been suggested. as they led Him away it became obvious that the previous treatment by the soldiers had left Him to weak to carry the cross so a man by the name of Simon, a Cyrenian from North Africa, who may have been known as a friend of Jesus, was commandeered to carry the cross.
There followed after this progression, a great multitude of people. It was a very mixed group of people. Friends and well wishers, common people who were moved with compassion, those who usually followed all executions, some motivated by pity, some by curiosity, most were believed to have been women, a large group of people with very mixed feelings, yet all seemed to be weeping and lamenting that which was sure to follow.
Though one would think that Jesus would be totally taken up by His own condition, He found time to turn to those who wept and comfort them. Notice Jesus calls them "Daughters of Jerusalem". It appears that these women are strangers but they were residents of Jerusalem. He bade them not to weep for Him but rather to weep for themselves and their children. Behold destruction is coming upon your city. Let the "Daughters of Zion" who own Him as their King, rejoice in Him but let the "Daughters of Jerusalem" that only weep for Him and do not take Him as their King, weep and tremble for He will come and judge them.
The time will come when these women will wish that they had been childless. Things will be so bad that they will wish to be buried alive. Hosea 10:8 says they will hide in the darkest and deepest caves, seeking to get away from the destruction. They would prefer the possibility of being crushed to pieces rather than face the judgment. Verse 31 is believed to refer to Ezek. 20:47, where it speaks of the "fire" that will devour even the green trees as well as the dry trees. As most people know, green wood does not burn well. The comparison is that if they do this to Jesus, the green tree, what will they do to us, the dry tree?
