Habakkuk Introduction

Habakkuk (embrace) the man is mentioned only in this book and nowhere else in our Bible, however, the 12th. Book of the Apocrypha, Bel and the Dragon, mentions Habakkuk as being "carried" from Judah to Babylon by an Angel to feed Daniel while he was in the lions den. This is not mentioned in the Book of Daniel. He was probably a Levite musician who lived in the 7th century B.C. During his life and mentioned in the book are such events in history as the Chaldaean independence from Assyria, 626 B.C., the destruction of Nineveh by the Medes, 612 B.C., the triumphant conquests of the Chaldaeans, 600 B.C., a time when paganism seemed to flourish and Habakkuk, looking out on these history making events of his day, asked why the ruthless overcame the righteous and whether it paid to be good. A commentary was found on this book in 1947 along with the Dead Sea Scrolls.
