God Helps Habakkuk

Chapter 2 records the help that God gives Habakkuk in the solving of his quandary. Looking down from his watchtower, he hears God say, "In time, righteous will overcome evil", meanwhile, Let man with confidence; declare the doom of the "evil doers". Five "woes" on the evildoers is declared:

  1. Woe to him who takes what is not his.
  2. Woe to him who builds upon evil gain.
  3. Woe to him who builds a town with blood (Nebuchadnezzar at Babylon).
  4. Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink (the kings of Babylon forced the people to drink toasts to them every night).
  5. Woe to him who gives commands to a piece of wood or a stone, these idols are totally void of sense or reason.
