Hosea Introduction

Having completed the books of the Five Major Prophets, we start the study of the Twelve Minor Prophets. Hosea is the first of those prophets. Hosea was the son of Beeri. We know nothing about his father and very little about Hosea. He lived after the Prophet Amos in Northern Israel and before Isaiah during the reign of King Jeroboam II (786-746 BC.) Inasmuch as he makes no mention of the events in Isa. 7:1 and II Kings 16:5: or of the raid by the Assyrians on Gilead and Galilee (II Kings 15:29) in 733 BC., we can assume that his mission had been concluded before that date.

He lived approximately 40 years. He was in love with the land and very familiar with its geography, particularly Bethel and Samaria. He was a country man, concerned with wild and domestic animals. He had a working understanding of agriculture. He championed respect for landmarks. He had a knowledge of the priesthood. He was also familiar with politics and foreign affairs. He was very capable in all areas of life except in matrimony.

We will divide the book into two parts:

  1. Chapters 1-3, the parallel of the relationship between Hosea and his unfaithful wife Gomer and God and his unfaithful people Israel.
  2. Chapters 4-14, sermons on Israel's sins and their punishment.
