This chapter describes in detail the sins of the people of Judah, which would be punished by famine and those which would be punished by exile and bondage. Isaiah uses a parable much as Jesus did in His teachings. He compares Judah to an unfruitful vineyard. A vineyard that had been nurtured, feed and cared for but produced nothing. The vineyard as well as Judah deserved to be destroyed.
He lists their sins, which did abound among them. Covetousness, greed for worldly wealth. Rioting, reveling and drunkenness, which shall be punished by captivity. Presuming upon the justice and mercy of God, falsely defining the Laws of God, perverting them to ease their conscience. For this a great destruction shall come upon Judah and all shall be laid to waste. This will be done by the invasion of a foreign power (Babylon).
