Condemnation of the Ephraimites

Click here to read Isaiah 28.

Chapters 28 thru 31 deal with Judah and Assyria. Judah is condemned for its failure to listen to the warnings of Israel. It is warned for its contempt of God's judgments. Judah prided itself in escaping the judgments that had befallen Israel. Isaiah warned that unless they repented and turned to the Lord, they to would be judged and that their haste to get the help of Egypt to escape that judgment was in vain. This was borne out when the Assyrian Army attacked; the Egyptian Armies and those of Judah were routed. God saved Jerusalem from destruction.

In this chapter the Ephraimites are condemned for their pride and drunkenness but in the midst of this condemnation is the promise of favor to a remnant of these people. They are also condemned for not listening to the Prophet in the past, they are here called "stupid" and "dull" for lacking the intelligence to listen and act on his council.

Likewise the "rulers" of Jerusalem are condemned for their contempt for God's council given through the Prophet Isaiah. They are here compared to the results of farmer's labors who having spent many days in cultivating his crops finds that there is no harvest. God had blessed the people of Judah and spent much time in cultivating their obedience and faith only to find very little results for His labors.

This is certainly a lesson for us who have benefited from God's love and care without giving Him any fruit for His labors.
