Again this warning seems to be aimed at the approaching danger of the Assyrians and their destruction of Judah and their siege of Jerusalem. Here condemned is the placing of their trust in Egypt to deliver them instead of God. Particularly condemned are those in authority who sponsored this alliance with Egypt and who were openly defiant of the advice of God's Prophet. Here God's judgment is promised to those who were responsible for this and a gracious promise of hope for those who were not and who trusted in God.
The total routing of the Assyrian Army was the evidence of this promise to those who were faithful for it was an occasion of great joy and assurance of God's love for His people in spite of their disobedient leaders.
Much of this deliverance spoken of here can be seen in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it's promise of deliverance that results in joy and assurance.
