This chapter deals with a warning to all nations who persecute God's people. Here Isaiah pronounces ultimate doom to all nations that oppress God's people. Though Edom (Esau) is the only one mentioned, because of the old enmity between Esau and Jacob, which was typical of the conflict between good and evil, and flowed from the original conflict between the Serpent and the "seed of woman".
Though it appears to be aimed at the desolation caused by the armies of Assyria and the joy they seemed to have in the bringing to completion the prophesies of Isaiah concerning the destruction of Judah because of their disobedience, it probably had a far reaching application to all who would be the enemies of God's Kingdom. It appears to look forward to the Day of Judgment when there will be final desolation of all things and all the records will be set straight.
