This chapter had two purposes. One, to convict sinners and two, to console God's faithful worshippers. The Author shows the hopelessness of those who worship idols and encourages the faithful to make a stand for God and encourages them with the assurance that He will take their part in the destruction of their enemies. He challenges the idols to a comparison of wisdom and power either in prophesy or experience.
The chapter can be summed up with the following words of the Author, "If Jehovah be God, then follow Him but if Baal be god, then follow him."
