Cyrus, God's Anointed

Click here to read Isaiah 43.

This chapter declares Cyrus, King of Persia, God's anointed shepherd because of his release and support of the Jews. He was a type of the "Great Redeemer", redeeming the Jews from bondage in Babylon. This is a preamble of the great redemptive work of Christ.

Here the Author brings good news of God's awareness of their plight and His promise to deliver them from it. Here also is issued a challenge to all idols to match the power and omnipotence of God. The promised redemption of the Jews here in Babylon is compared to the deliverance of the Israelites from the bondage in Egypt. There is also a gentle reminder of the sins that got them in this situation in the first place and a warning not to repeat them.
