Opposition to Idol Worship

Click here to read Isaiah 46.

This chapter prepares the Jews for deliverance by, one, showing them the futility of worshipping idols, and two, showing them the blessings of worshipping God. It is well to remind ourselves that it had been at least 70 years since the Jews were taken into captivity to Babylon and very few of them had ever seen their homeland or had been taught in the exercise of their religion as their fore fathers had. Many knew only the idols of Babylon that functioned on fear and witchcraft to maintain their hold on their converts. Many who were not converts feared the superstition that was associated with them. Here the Author assures them that they have nothing to be afraid of for "pieces of stone" can do nothing to hinder their salvation from Babylon.

Also warned about here is the propensity of these people to make idols even of the one true and living God, they somehow needed something to see and feel but here the Prophet warns that God forbids the making of idols even to His likeness. He tells them to look for God in his word not in an image. Stressed for theirs and for our encouragement is the fact that mans lack of faith will not in any way make the word and promises of God of no effect.
