Chapter 58 continues to proclaim the reasons for the ultimate destruction of Israel. Particularly condemned here are the hypocrites. Most believe that this condemnation is not limited to any one age. Some have tried to limit it to the conditions that existed which caused the destruction of the nation of Judah. Others apply it to the time of Isaiah and the false display of religion that he observed in the Jews in Babylon. Still others believe he was speaking of the Pharisees before and during our Saviors time. Truthfully, it can be applied to all ages; hypocrisy is common to all and is condemned by God wherever it is found.
Noted here was the "form of religion" which they professed that lacked personal commitment. The bragging that they did in the "doing of things" and their condemnation of God for not taking notice of them. Here the Prophet describes the sins that made their fasts worthless and instructions on how to correct it. He ends the chapter with words of hope for those who do keep the fasts properly and observe the Sabbath.
