Jeremiah's Sermon Continued

Click here to read Jeremiah 3.

Chapter continues Jeremiah's First Sermon. It was a mighty sermon for God had touched his lips and he certainly did not speak like a child as Jeremiah thought he would. He extends to them the invitation to repent and return to God and showed them how, where sin abounds, Grace much more abounds. He reminds them how much they deserved the wrath of God but how eager God was to forgive them when they were ready to repent.

Then he looked around about him, and to him, the world situation looked like this:

  1. There was a 3-way struggle for world supremacy, Assyria on the north, Babylon on the east and Egypt on the south.
  2. Assyria had dominated for 200 years but was growing weak.
  3. Babylon was becoming more powerful.
  4. Egypt, who a 100 years earlier was a world power, was staging a comeback. Egypt had conquered Judah.
  5. The Chaldeans, under Nebuchadnezzer, defeated Egypt and by political treaty, took over Babylon and Judah.
  6. Judah had become a prize to be tossed back and forth to the winner.
