Here he denies that God would protect them because of the Temple. He reminds them that Shiloh, the place of worship in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, was destroyed. He warns them that their "show of religion" will not keep them from destruction.
Obviously the people put much stock in being God's Chosen People and in having within their bounds, God's Temple. They relied upon this to the point of being arrogant. Here Jeremiah assures them that this would not protect them or keep them from being judged for their sins. He warns them that their "form of religion" was unacceptable in the eyes of the Lord. He reminds them that the Northern Kingdom of Israel relied upon these things and they were destroyed in spite of them. He declares to them that obedience was better than sacrifices.
He prophesies that their destruction will be in comparison to their sins.
