This chapter gives a warning to those who will be carried into captivity into Babylon. "Do not learn the way of the heathen." He warns them against idolatry and astrology, both of which were practiced in Babylon.
Babylon was known for its practices of idolatry and professions of outright ignorance. They taught many the way of the heathen and Jeremiah here warns those who would be taken into captivity by the Chaldeans that this must not happen to them but rather they must remain true to the faith of their fathers.
To those who would not be taken into captivity and would be allowed to remain in Judah, he warns against false security and presuming upon God's protection. All this causes Jeremiah to mourn; he did not like being the one to tell these people of the impending doom and the destruction that would follow.
