This chapter records a conspiracy against Jeremiah by the people of his hometown of Ana-thoth, God's discovery of it and the judgment He brought upon them.
The chapter begins with a reminder to the people of the covenant that God had made with their forefathers and the conditions of that covenant which depended upon their obedience to God. He charges them with the breaking of this covenant especially in their idolatry. He warns them that their idols will not save them from destruction and the time will come when even the Prophets will not pray for them and all of this will be brought upon them by their disobedience and willful sinning against God.
Described here also is an account of a conspiracy by the men of Anathoth, a town a short distance N-E of Jerusalem, the birthplace of Jeremiah. It was one of the "cities of refuge" so designated by the Lord. They conspired to kill Jeremiah that they might not have to listen to his prophesies of destruction, those words that caused pain to their conscience. Total destruction was brought upon the people of this town by the Lord as judgment for this conspiracy.
