Jeremiah's Discouragement

Click here to read Jeremiah 12.

This chapter records discouragement on Jeremiahs part. He sees the success of wicked men and the lack of it on his part, so he prays to God that God might bring judgment upon these wicked people, but God rebukes him for his impatience and lack of faith.

We can easily see why Jeremiah would have become discouraged. He looked about him and it seemed that the evil were rewarded and the righteous were allowed to suffer. This seemed contrary to what God had been saying to Jeremiah and what Jeremiah had been saying to the people as a warning. He felt abandoned and took his feelings to the Lord. In return, the Lord chastened him and told him to be patient that the worst was yet to come and that his troubles, which seemed great now, would only increase.

God explains His delay in bringing justice upon these people as a means of bringing despair to their neighbors who had brought much persecution upon Judah and even though their sins would be judged, at that time He was assuring their enemies that He was still the God of Israel.
