Two Parables
In this chapter, Jeremiah tells the people two parables:
- Jeremiah had a girdle. It was probably a very fine linen sash,
which he wore around his waste from time to time. The Lord told him
to take it and hid it on the bank of the Euphrates River. When he
returned later to get it, it had become rotten from the moisture.
This was a parallel to Israel. While they remained close to God
they were fine and usable people but when they left His presence,
they became "rotten" with sin.
- The second parable was about a bottle of wine, which without
protection, would be dashed against the other bottles and broken.
They had become like bottles without protection, the protection of
God, and would be dashed and broken by the instruments of God's
judgment.
