A Great Draught

Click here to read Jeremiah 14.

This chapter records a great drought that was upon the land. Jeremiah prayed to the Lord that He might put an end to it. He attempts to make excuses for the people and puts the blame upon "false prophets".

This draught was a judgment from God and it occurred near the end of King Josiah's reign (642-640 BC) and continued on over in to King Jehoiakim's reign. It was sent as a warning of greater judgments to come in an effort to bring about repentance from the people. Here the extreme calamity of it is described in great detail. Jeremiah seeing the people suffer prays that the Lord will bring rain and end the draught. He tried to excuse the people by laying the blame on false prophets. God's answer to Jeremiah was to not intercede for them but to mourn for them.
