Judgment Foretold in the Valley of Tophet

Click here to read Jeremiah 19.

This chapter repeats the theme of the past chapters, the approaching destruction of Jerusalem and Judah because of the sins of the people. This time, for some reason, he is instructed to make his forecasts in the Valley of Tophet. He was to summon a company of Elders together to be witnesses to what he said. He was to describe the judgment that was to come upon them because of their sins and he was to use an earthen vessel, which he was to throw to the ground and shatter into many pieces, which would be symbolic of the destruction of Judah. When he had completed this he was to go to the Court of the Temple and ratify what he had done.
