Jeremiah's Public Embarrassment

Click here to read Jeremiah 20.

This chapter records an encounter between Pa-shur, a Priest, and Jeremiah. Jeremiah spoke and his words were true but instead of the Priest welcoming the "man of God", he became angry and struck him with his hand. Then he took Jeremiah and had him put in public stocks exposing him to ridicule of the people. Jeremiah appealed to God to right this injustice. Jermiah was released and he said to Pa-shur, "The Lord does not call your name Pa-shur but He calls you "Terror" for you shall be a terror to yourself and all your friends.

The proclamation of Jeremiah in the last chapter apparently did not humble but rather it provoked the people, at least it did a Priest by the name of Pashur. The arrest and embarrassment of Jeremiah caused him to despise the day he was born but it also humbles him and reminds that he to had not been without sin, but rather subject to like passions as were this people.
