Jeremiah's Letter to the Captives

Click here to read Jeremiah 29.

The contest between Jeremiah and false prophets carried over into captivity. Before captivity, they faced each other to declare their differences, now they do so by letter writing. While some of the false prophets were carried away to Babylon, Jeremiah remained in Judah. In Babylon the false prophets sought to lead the Jews into revolt against their masters but Jeremiah pleaded with them to be reconciled to their captivity and that God would, in due time, deliver them.

He cautions them not to take any stake in the false prophesies of an early deliverance from captivity. He assures them that God would deliver them after 70 years from their bondage. He prophesies the death of two of the false prophets in Babylon and describes this as the main reason for his letter.

We also have recorded for us here a letter from Shemaiah, a false prophet in Babylon, to the priests in Jerusalem to encourage them to persecute Jeremiah.

He also denounces God's judgment of bringing all this destruction upon them.
