Chapters 40 thru 45 record the last years of Jeremiah. They tell of the few who remained back in Jerusalem and how they continued to sin as before. In spite of all the destruction, they were not humbled or reformed.
When the Jews that had been scattered into the surrounding countries at the destruction of Israel and other areas of Judah heard that the King of Babylon had left a remnant of people in Judah and that he had appointed Geda-lish, son of Ahikam, over then, they returned to the land of Judah. They worked the fields and vineyards and there they heard of a plot to kill Gedaliah. He had treated Jeremiah well and the country did well for a time until this treacherous plan was made to kill him. When those who were in charge of the workers heard of the plot they went to Mizpah and told Gedaliah that Baalis, King of Ammon had sent Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah to slay him. Johanan wanted to go and kill Ishmael but Gedaliah would not let him, as he did not believe it was true.
