Gedaliah's faith in Ishmael proved to be his downfall. The Jews who had been left behind and those who returned to Judah after the Chaldean forces left were very happy to be living in their own land and felt secure in the Protectorship of Gedaliah. Here we see that Gedaliah is barbarously slain by Ishmael and all the Jews that were with him also and their bodies were thrown in to pit. Some 40 other men, who happened to be in the area on their way to Jerusalem, were killed also. Ten escaped only to be captured by Ishmael who was in the process of taking them off to Ammon when A man by the name of Johanan liberated them and became their leader with plans to lead them to Egypt which we will hear more about in the next chapter.
