In this chapter, Jonah tells of his experiences after he was thrown overboard. He was covered by the stormy waves, he sank and death was very near, the seaweed wrapped around his head and he sank down to the bottom of the ocean floor. He was locked out of life and imprisoned in the land of death. Now the lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah and when he had lost all hope his thoughts turned once more to the Lord. "I will never worship anyone but you." "If I get out of this mess alive, I will surly fulfill my promise," Then after 3 days and 3 nights, the Lord ordered the fish to spit up Jonah upon the beach.
We have here a type of Christ's resurrection. As Christ was 3 days and 3 nights in the grave so Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the fish. Though Jonah never died, he was resurrected to the land of the living.
