Chapter 1 establishes Joshua as the leader of Israel. After the death of Moses, God spoke to Joshua. "Lead my people across the Jordan." "Wherever you go will be part of the Land of Israel." "No one will be able to oppose you for as long as you live, for I will be with you." This was a wonderful commitment that God made to Joshua, but God always requires something from us. From Joshua He required strength, courage and obedience to every law that Moses had given them. It would be his job to constantly remind the people about these laws.
With God's commission and instructions, Joshua issued a command to the leaders of Israel: "Get the people ready to cross the Jordan." "In three days we will cross and conquer the land." To the leaders of the tribes of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh he said, "God has given you this land east of the Jordan but in 3 days your troops must lead us across the Jordan to conquer the land on the west side." "You must stay until it is completely conquered." "Only then can you go back home on the east side of the Jordan." To this they fully agreed and pledged themselves to obey him as they had Moses.
