Instructions for Crossing the Jordan

Click here to read Joshua 3.

Chapter 3 begins the account of Israel crossing over the Jordan River. The Jordan River could normally be crossed by wading, but it would appear from verse 15 that this crossing occurred at the "harvest season" when the river was normally at flood stage. So we see another miracle similar to the Red Sea crossing.

Notice the instructions for the crossing:

  1. The Levites were to take the Ark of the Covenant and lead the rest of the people.
  2. The people then are to follow about 1,000 yards behind.
  3. When the feet of those who were carrying the Ark touched the waters of the Jordan, the water would stop flowing.
  4. Joshua and the Priests with the Ark stood in the middle of the river until the last of the 2 million people and all of their cattle and other possessions were across.
