Crossing the Jordan

Click here to read Joshua 4.

Chapter 4 tells of their first altar to the Lord in the land of Canaan. God ordered Joshua to have 12 stones taken from the Jordan River right where the Priests had stood and take them to the other side to a place where they would set up camp for the night. "These stones shall be a memorial to how God shut off the waters of the Jordan and allowed the people to cross over on dry ground."

The first to cross over behind the Priests were 40,000 armed men from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh as evidence of their good faith to their promise to Moses and Joshua to assist in the conquest of Canaan even though they had already acquired their inheritance east of the Jordan.

Because of this miraculous crossing, the people stood in awe of Joshua as they did Moses all the days of his life. With the people were across, the waters of the Jordan returned as they were before. Then Joshua set up camp at Gilgal, east of Jericho.
