Click here to read Joshua 15.

Chapter 15 describes the bounds of the land to be given to the Tribe of Judah. Their allotment was the whole southern portion of Canaan.

A more complete description of the inheritance of Judah is as follows:

  1. The southern boundary ran from the city of Zoar at the southern tip of the Dead Sea, S-W to Kadish-Barnea, then N-W along the Egyptian River to the Mediterranean Sea.
  2. The western boundary was the Mediterranean Sea from the mouth of the Egyptian River to the mouth of the Sorek River on the north.
  3. The northern boundary followed the Sorek River east to the city of Kir-jath-Jarim, then east to Jerusalem, and then continuing east to where the Jordan River empties into the Dead Sea.
  4. The eastern boundary was the western shore of the Dead Sea.

In giving this land to the tribe of Judah they were told to honor Caleb's inheritance which was within this area given to Judah.

There were in this area 114 cities with their surrounding villages. They were to extend their land south and west and defeat any remaining pockets of resistance. They had problems with the people of Jerusalem. This city is believed to have been kept from them as punishment because of their lack of enthusiasm in the work of conquering the land.
